UNISON – Working for safer schools

Our members face uncertainty as schools reopen to all pupils in England from 8 March.

UNISON understand that members will have lots of questions at the moment and we want to do everything we can to provide support.

UNISON’s nation education team have updated our model escalation process for branches supporting members with health and safety concerns and have a model letter for branches to use if employers are not taking necessary actions.

Nationally UNISON has also sent a copy of our risk assessment checklist to all local authorities, schools and multi-academy trusts, calling on them to implement these measures.

There is an advice page for school & early years staff which includes fully updated FAQs. The page also includes our risk assessment checklist for reopening and vulnerable employee guide with model letters, which members received by email last week.

UNISON continue to meet regularly with Department for Education officials and ministers, challenging their approach and highlighting the areas of their guidance that we think need to be improved for schools to reopen safely.

Hopefully the advice page will help any questions you have but if you have any further queries please contact the Branch.
